UPCOMING WORKSHOPS:
CREATING SUSTAINABLE WRITING GROUPS
Writing groups can be a key to professional productivity. While graduate programs often facilitate writing groups, adjunct faculty, independent scholars, faculty at teaching-centered institutions, and mid-career scholars may find it difficult to create a sustainable group. This workshop will help participants articulate their writing group needs and identify a format to meet those needs. Before the workshop, participants will complete an intake form and read a short article by Helen Sword on various formats for writing groups. During the workshop, participants will discuss personal writing group challenges and successes, along with advantages and disadvantages of particular formats. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to articulate their writing group needs, define a plan for meeting those needs, and connect with potential writing partners. This workshop, which has been held annually since 2019, has led to the formation of new writing groups each year, many of which are still together.

These challenges are exacerbated by social distancing restrictions. This Zoom workshop will help participants articulate their writing group needs and identify a format to meet those needs. Emphasis will be placed on writing groups in online settings. Before the workshop, participants will complete an intake form and read a short article by Helen Sword on best practices. During the workshop, presenters and participants will discuss personal writing group challenges and successes, along with advantages and disadvantages of particular formats. Participants will then break into groups (based on intake forms) to outline attainable goals, discuss the kinds of writing they want to workshop, and brainstorm ideas for creating groups post-workshop.
